In December Los Angeles police moved up their annual Citywide Gun Buyback and collected an arsenal including 698 rifles, 363 shotguns, 75 assault weapons, 901 handguns and here is a big surprise, two rocket launchers.

Long metal tubes that were once capable of firing rockets but lacked the parts and projectiles needed to fire them the weapons have no place on the street said the police.

“Those are weapons of war, weapons of death,” said LAPD Chief Charlie Beck, according to the Los Angeles Times. “These are not hunting guns. These are not target guns. … they have no place in our great city.”

The individuals that brought the weapons in told police the weapons belonged to a family who had served in the military and did not want the rocket launchers in their house anymore reported the Times.

The plan was to check with the military to determine the origins of the launchers said the LAPD.

Last May on Mother’s Day another of the rocket launchers turned up so this wasn’t the first time this has happened in LA.

The number of weapons turned in was 400 more this year than last even though the event was moved up by several months because of the tragic shooting in Newtown CT, said Mayor Villaraigosa. This is an important piece of the city’s violence reduction efforts and was declared a success according to Villaraigosa.

166 guns were just given back in exchange for nothing which was perhaps the greatest testament to success of the program.

Grocery store gift cards were received for turning them in for up to 200 each firearm and also depending on the type.

Before the New Year celebrations, the Mayor warned citizens that “Firing a gun in the air is a felony.” “Don’t fire your guns in celebration. But if you do in the city of Los Angeles, we will go after you. If you do it in the county, the sheriff will go after you.”
